Double pane glass is also commonly referred to as a insulated unit or insulated glass.
Double pane glass is comprised of two 1/8 or 1/4 inch plates that are separated by a 1/2 or 3/4 inch mill finish spacer. This is why the double pane glass is also referred to as a insulated glass unit, becuase when all three components are fused together as one the double pane becomes a unit.
Due to the colder weather in the northern states double pane glass is more commonly installed into storefront doors and windows for its insulating value.
Double pane glass, since it is a insulator, is almost always installed into exterior doors and windows.
