A rough opening is the exact width and height of a cut out opening of any given area. In the construction industry a rough opening can also be referred to as the punched opening.
Before you order new commercial doors you will need to know your rough opening.
How To Measure A Rough Opening For New Doors
To get the correct dimensions for your new storefront doors follow the steps below.
- (1) Set the tip of your tape measure against the left side, "left leg of the opening" and pull your tape horizontally to the right side, "right leg of the opening". The measurement showing on the tape while against the right side, "right leg of the opening" is the exact width of the rough opening.
- (2) Set the tip of your tape measure against the top, "top of the opening" and pull your tape vertically to the finished floor or sill, "bottom of the opening". The measurement showing on the tape while against the finished floor or sill, "bottom of the opening" is the exact height of the rough opening.
- (3 FINAL) Subtract 1/2" from the rough opening width and subtract 1/4" from the rough opening height. Now, your new door(s) with frame will slide right into your rough opening
- Tip: the over all width, "frame with door" cannot be the same exact size as the rough opening becuase it will not fit.
